CDRH Medical Device Electromagnetic Compatibility Program Extensive laboratory testing by CDRH, and others, has revealed that many devices can be susceptible to problems caused by EMI. Indeed, the CDRH has been investigating incidents of device EMI, and working on solutions (e.g. the 1979 draft EMC standard for medical devices), since the late 1960's, when there was concern for EMI with cardiac pacemakers.

Medical Device Reporting Under the Safe Medical Devices Act of 1990 (SMDA), device user facilities must report device-related deaths to the FDA and the manufacturer, if known. Device user facilities must also report device-related serous injuries to the manufacturer, or to the FDA if the manufacturer is not known. In addition, SMDA also requires that device user facilities submit to FDA, on a semiannual basis, a summary of all reports submitted during that time period. The device user facility reporting section of SMDA became effective on November 28, 1991.
